Notes and Editorial Reviews

Did you know that the archetypal enticing slogal for travel agents was invented back in 1819 by the composer Sigismund Neukomm? He was then in the midst of a passionate love affair with the fascinating land of Brazil which he had just discovered. But better yet: born in Salzburg in the house opposite Mozart's, Neukomm found in Rio de Janeiro the latter's worthiest heir in the New world: the mulatto composer José Mauricio Nunes Garcia. Here they are brought together, the Austrian decking himself in rich Brazilian colours, the Brazilian revealed as a past master of Classical art at its most exalted.
