Notes and Editorial Reviews

Multiple award-winning guitarist Irina Kulikova celebrates her 25th anniversary as a performer with this recording of works by contemporary Russian composer-guitarists. Winner of the Michele Pittaluga, Guitarra Alhambra, Iserlohn and Forum Gitarre Wien competitions, she has selected a programme that reflects the abiding strength of the folkloric vein in Russian musical life. Rich and expressive poetry is the hallmark of the music of Konstantin Vassiliev, not least in his homages to other composers in Three Lyric Pieces, while Sergey Rudnev and Viktor Kozlov explore vibrant dance patterns and moments of tranquillity in their own equally colour-conscious compositions.  Irina Retuns! February 10, 2015 By Oscar O. Veterano See All My Reviews ". Irina Kulikova - “Reminiscences of Russia - NAXOS Any new recording by the great Irina Kulikova is cause for celebration. Her latest project is particularly intriguing, as it is comprised of guitar music by three rarely heard contemporary Russian composers, Konstantin Vassiliev, Sergey Rudnev, and Viktor Koslov. The guitar just may be the ultimate chamber music instrument, so it is hardly surprising to find that, as in Paris, London, Vienna and Berlin, by the late 18th century it had found favor in the parlors and salons of St. Petersburg. What may be surprising is how well all three of these young composers have incorporated modern harmonic elements with traditional folkloric melodies. The result is an often transcendent, dream-like listening experience. As always, Ms. Kulikova’s playing displays such a depth of understanding and emotional commitment that one can sometimes overlook her total mastery of the guitar and the ease with which she is able to take on even the most technically difficult musical passages. In an age of overhype, it becomes harder and harder for words to hold on to their meaning; Irina Kulikova’s “Reminiscences of Russia” goes a long way toward rescuing the original definitions of beauty and greatness. Simply stated, it is a beautiful recording by a great musician. A must-have. Highest possible recommendation 10 out of 10 Oscar O. Veterano" Report Abuse
