Hermann Zilcher was born in Frankfurt and as a child revealed a marked dual talent for both painting and music. The emphasis finally shifted completely to music during his years of study and he became known throughout Germany first as a concert pianist, then as a composer. This led to his appointment as Professor, first at the Music Academy in Munich and, from 1920 onwards, as Director of the Music Conservatory in Wurzburg. His music completely follows the example set by Brahms, Richard Strauss and Max Reger. His great model was Mozart. On this basis he developed a musical language combining elements of folklore with strongly contrapuntal thematic treatment. His Piano Trio, Op. 56 was written for Zilcher's own concert use.
