Notes and Editorial Reviews

Someone reading this is exclaiming, "I donít believe it! The Santoliquido Trio!" Even the most obscure of historic performers have their followers, though this group is almost entirely forgotten today, due mostly to a very small discography. Based in Rome, the Trio was founded in 1942. Pianist Santoliquido studied under Casella and Brugnoli, became a renowned teacher and founded the Rome Quartet. Violinist Pelliccia, highly acclaimed specialist in contemporary music, gave the European premiere of the Schoenberg Violin Concerto, and cellist Amfiteatrov, born in Paris, performed with major orchestras throughout Europe and the United States and, for a time, was principal cellist with La Scala. The original recordings were made Read more by DGG and sound remarkably well for their time. For some listeners, this will be a nostalgia trip; for others, here is a chance to make an acquaintance with some remarkable performers from the past.

“The recording of the C minor trio, new to me, is delectable... The recording is also superb for 1942. The pianist is a classicist to her fingertips, throwing off pearl-like runs of notes with a consistently lovely tone, and her artistry is fully matched by her colleagues. The 'Ghost' is as splendid as I remember it, with a heartfelt slow movement. This lovely disc carries an unequivocal recommendation.” – Tully Potter, Classic Record Collector

“Dynamically propelled and sensitively shaped performances.” – Tom Hall, Culture Magazine
