The great masters of the flute were performing music of an otherworldly beauty far before classical music was born. Hand held flutes were being played in China in 900 B.C. The Di ze, or bamboo flute, originated there and music for that instrument, perhaps because of its practice involving breath control and refinement, was often associated with meditation. The Japanese absorbed Chinese music, and altered the pentatonic scale; the Di ze became the Shakuhachi, a flute associated with the Zen sect.
