Theodora Hanslowe is a well-known American concert and operatic mezzo-soprano. She is a native of Ithaca, NY, and earned her bachelor of arts at Cornell University. She continued her voice studies at Peabody Conservatory, earning an Artist Diploma.
She benefited in 1992 from a Richard F. Gold Career Grant and a Theodore Presser Study Grant, and participated in the opera workshops of the Santa Fe Opera in New Mexico and the CincinnatiRead more Opera. She has returned to Cincinnati to sing as a soloist in that city's famous May Festival.
Her major operatic debut was at South America's leading opera house, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, as the Composer in Richard Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos, in 1993.
Hanslowe debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1994, in the starring role of Rosina in Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and has returned for further performances, including the role of Stephano in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette. Her New York recital debut was at Weill Recital Hall in New York, in the 1997 - 1998 season.
Rosina is one of her signature roles. She has sung it with the Opera Theater of St. Louis, the Glimmerglass Opera, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Portland Opera, and the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv. Another leading role in her repertory is the title part in Rossini's Cenerentola (Cinderella), which she has sung with the Florida Grand Opera (she debuted there in that role in the 1995-1996 season), the Deutsche Staatsoper Dresden, the Deutsche Opera am Rhein Düsseldorf, L'Opéra de Montréal, and the Washington Summer Opera. In addition, she has sung Isabella in L'Italiana in Algeri with the Los Angeles Music Center Opera and has appeared with the Monte Carlo Opera as Chérubin in Massenet's opera.
She is practiced in period performance and style, and has sung Dorabella in Mozart's Così fan tutte with Boston Baroque, in Monteverdi's Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra under Raymond Leppard, and on a tour of the United States with the Hanover Band, singing a program of Mozart arias.
Her concert repertoire includes Britten's The Rescue of Penelope, singing the U.S. premiere of the work, again under Leppard with the Indianapolis Symphony, Berlioz's Les Nuits d'été (the work on her Carnegie Hall debut, with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra), Bernstein's Arias and Barcarolles (with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center), and the Schoenberg chamber arrangement of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde (with members of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk Stuttgart).
