Notes and Editorial Reviews

Georgy Dmitriev is one of the strongest of Russian contemporary composers. All of the works on this CD are new recordings made in 1998. Dmitriev was born into the family of a medical doctor. He began to play the piano at six and began composing almost immediately. On the recommendation of Dmitri Shostakovich he entered the composers' faculty of the Moscow State Conservatory in 1961, in the class of Dmitri Kabalevsky. He graduated with honors in 1968 and from 1969 to 1983 he combined his work as a composer with work as a teacher at the Gnesin State Musical Pedagogical Institute and the Moscow Conservatory. In 1973 his book Percussion Instruments: Interpretation and Their Present State came out. It was the first book about percussion Read more instruments in the Russian language. At the Moscow Autumn Festival in 1979, the public had the first opportunity to hear some of Dmitriev's large orchestral works. Here, his reputation was born. In 1986, he became vice-chairman of the Board of the Moscow branch of the Composer's Union. In the first democratic elections ever held by the group, he was elected its chairman in 1989. In 1992 he became chairman of the International Association of the Composers of the CIS countries and in 1993 he became Chairman of the Russian Musical Society. Today he teaches the composition class at the Russian Academy of Choral Art. Read less
