Tatiana Petrovna Nikolayeva was born in Bezhitsa, former U.S.S.R. to musician parents. Her mother was a noted pianist at the Moscow Conservatory and her father, a violinist. Showing great potential as a pianist by age 3, she entered the Moscow Conservatory at 12, studying with Goldenweiser and Golubev and graduated in 1948. She achieved early recognition by winning the 1950 International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition. Over the year she performed and recorded works by Bach and Beethoven and added a great many works to her catalog.
