Biography by "Blue" Gene Tyranny
Susan Addison is a leading exponent of the sackbut, tenor trombone, and other early trombones in their many forms. Her presence has been invaluable in many orchestra ensembles devoted to early music. Her basic education took place at Monksdyke High School in her hometown of Louth. Her graduate studies took place at the Royal College of Music, where her teachers were Arthur Wilson and John Iveson. In her rich career, she has performed with the Academy of Ancient Music, Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Alberti Brass, Almeida Opera Ensemble, Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Blackadder Brass, London Chamber Orchestra, London Sinfonia, English Baroque Soloists, English Classical Players, English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble, English Festival Orchestra, Ex Cathedra, the Gabrieli Consort, His Majesty's Sagbutts and Cornetts, the King's Consort, London Handel Orchestra, Musical Associates (U.K.) Limited, Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique, Golden Age Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century of Amsterdam, Orchestra of the Renaissance, Parley of Instruments, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Scottish Opera, and Orchestra of the Sixteen, among others. After her four-and-a-half-year engagement with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Addison returned to London and directed much of her efforts into the research of the music and instruments of the fourteenth to eighteenth centuries, including a project conducted with her students at the Royal Academy of Music to investigate the possibilities of staging musical battle sequences of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (by composers Heinrich von Biber, etc.) Addison also teaches at the Royal College of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music, and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
