New symphonic music attracts a very distinctive audience. Whereas many traditionalists avoid the work of their contemporaries, fans of works such as those found on volume nine of MMC Recordings' "New Century" series revel in the anticipation of the future of music.
These performances by the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra cover a wide range of possibilities. The dignified, traditional Concerto for Piano by J. Windel Brown contrasts mightily with the searing surrealism of Steven Block's 'Shadows.' While Brown works within the concertante form, Block chases Jungian nightmares. Paula Diehl has refined her own unique compositional style, creating the delightful 'Right of Way.' Serene while still providing its surprises, Diehl's piece features the interplay of deceptively simple patterns, creating a truly satisfying whole. Lewis Nielson's 'Crosscurrents on the Vertical River' employs similar techniques, but its dissonance sets it apart. Building upon its cacophony, Nielson's composition finds its serenity at a different level.
