Notes and Editorial Reviews

The lively and colorful "Cross-Town Trio" was formed in 2000 by three musicians who were inspired by the theme of the World Saxophone Congress XII held in Montreal, Canada. These three diverse instrumentalists are also noted academicians in the State of Arkansas. Dr. Karen Griebling, viola, and Dr John Krebs, piano, both teach at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas and Dr. Jackie Lamar, saxophone, teaches at the University of Central Arkansas also in Conway.

Violist Karen Griebling is also a composer of chamber music for viola in addition to opera, lieder, ballet, orchestral, and choral works. Karen Griebling's music is heard on this release and offers a glimpse into the classical music culture in Arkansas which,
Read more like many other American communities, usually goes nationally unreported.

The album features this unusual combination of instruments in works by American composers and offers a chance to hear a work by Walter Sinclair Hartley (b. 1927) who has written numerous pieces and is noted among musicians for beautiful but rarely heard music for the saxophone.

Also featured is music by Margaret Griebling-Haigh, whose compositions have been described as haunting and charismatic. She has stated that she "firmly believes in the powers of memorable melodies and rhythms and strong formal structure."

The trio also performs a work by Stephen Griebling, a self-taught composer who majored in chemistry at Mount Union College and worked in the rubber industry in Akron, Ohio for 40 years. (Bringing to mind that Alexander Borodin was also a chemist.) Stephen Griebling's compositions have been performed by the Akron Symphony, the Springfield Symphony and members of the Cleveland Orchestra. Here is an opportunity to experience serious music making and and vibrant, modern works from the State of Arkansas.
