Biography by Robert Adelson
Stephen Farr holds the position of organist and master of the choristers at Guildford Cathedral in England. He was born in London in 1967 and studied with Robert Munns and David Sanger. He then pursued his organ training at Clare College, Cambridge. In 1990, he was appointed sub-organist and later a lecturer in music at Christ Church, Oxford. He toured with the Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Oxford in North and South America, Europe, and Australia, and made numerous recordings. After serving as assistant master of music at Winchester Cathedral, Farr assumed his position at Guildford in 2001. With the Guildford Cathedral Choir, he has toured in Denmark, performed in broadcasts, and recorded two compact discs. Farr has also performed as organist in concerts, broadcasts, and recordings. He has given recitals in major concert halls and cathedrals in Britain, the United States, and Europe. In 1988, he won the Royal College of Organists Performer of the Year competition. At international organ competitions in Odense, St. Alban's, and Paisley he has also been awarded prizes. He rescued from obscurity Widor's Symphony No. 3 for Organ and Orchestra, performing the work with the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast. As a continuo player, he has collaborated with many leading orchestras and soloists, including Emma Kirkby, Michael Chance, Jane Glover, Florilegium, the English Concert, London Baroque Soloists, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. BBC Music Magazine and Classic CD both awarded a five-star rating to Farr's recording of music by Langlais, made on the organ at Odense Cathedral in Denmark. Farr is a council member and examiner of the Royal College of Organists.
