Notes and Editorial Reviews

Francis Thorne has had an active role in American musical life in the late 20th century, from directorships of the Naumberg Foundation, MacDowell Colony, League of Composers and Manhattan School of Music to his role in the founding of the American Composers Orchestra. Somehow, amidst all that, there has also been time for composition, including seven symphonies, sixteen concertos and four string quartets, not to mention a host of vocal, chamber and theater works. One of his main affinities is to popular music, especially Tin Pan Alley standards and jazz, elements of which can be perceived in his 'Fanfare, Fugue and Funk' and in a sudden episode of boozy barroom crooning in the otherwise austere 'Four Nocturnes' for soprano. The Lyric Read more Variations No. 2 for quintet aspires to Webernesque concentration, while the Third String Quartet shows him in full modernist academic flower with its spiky atonality, dense counterpoint and prickly Bartokian textures.
