Notes and Editorial Reviews

First of all let's call your attention to the conductor of the orchestra on this disc - Jorma Panula, the great Finnish Professor of conducting at the Sibelius Academy, who has taught so many of the younger generation of Finnish conductors who are just now gaining considerable recognition. Jukka Linkola's Trumpet Concerto # 2 was commissioned by the Lieksa Brass Week in spring 1993 and is scored for E flat trumpet and string orchestra. It is in three movements. Leonid Bashmakov composed his Concerto for Jouko Harjanne and it too was commissioned by the Lieksa Brass Week. It was completed in early 1992 and first performed in the same year. Jouko Harjanne was born in 1962 and studied the trumpet at the Tampere Conservatory. He graduated in Read more 1982 and then studied with Timofei Dokshitser. In 1989, he was voted Finland's best brass player. The Spiritus Fortis Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1991 by a group of young musicians from the Sibelius Academy. They usually play without a conductor, but as I said, in this case they are joined by Mr. Panula. Here is an unusual disc which attains the highest level of musical quality. Read less
