PAULLI Kermessen i Brügge. Konservatoriet Peter Ernst Lassen, cond; Aalborg SO DANACORD (2 CDs: 138:03)

H. S. Paulli may have been to Bournonville as was Minkus to Petipa, and suffers accordingly in the eyes of music lovers, if not ballet lovers. Danacord issued a nine-CD set to celebrate the bicentenary of the choreographer’s birth in 2005, and now is issuing double-CD sets of that material. The Bournonville ballets are a particular legacy of the Royal Danish Ballet, some of which have been danced by Read more other companies, but it is truly in Copenhagen that they take on a special life as people progress through the company first as children onstage, then corps, then perhaps principals, and finally character dancers. Act I of Konservatoriet has frequently been given separately as it demonstrates many of the characteristics of Bournonville’s work encapsulated in 25 minutes, though the entire ballet has a story that is as complicated as many other of the choreographer’s works. We are fortunate that the accompanying material, in addition to an interesting essay on Bournonville, allows us to follow the action section by section. Kermessen i Brügge (Kermesse in Bruges) also teems with life, as three brothers are given gifts that endow them with magical powers by the alchemist Mirewelt. Complications ensue, but that does not stop Bournonville from providing a number of set pieces to show off his dancers. In both ballets Paulli uses music by other composers—large sections from Rossini’s Comte Ory in Kermesse in Bruges , Weber’s Invitation to the Dance and Chopin’s Grande Valse Brillante in Konservatoriet , the latter also concluding with a galop by H. C. Lumbye, the Danish Johann Strauss. Conductor Peter Ernst Lassen has long experience with this music and fashions attentive readings of the scores, assisted by the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra.
