Notes and Editorial Reviews

"Bizet's Carmen, Chabrier's España, Debussy's Soirée dans Grenade and Ravel's Boléro are but a few examples of the inspiration French composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries drew from Spain and Spanish music. The affection was abundantly reciprocated by composers south of the Pyrénées, many of whom studied and sojourned in France to develop their crafts and careers. Joaquin Turina, born in Seville, was no exception, and his three piano trios and piano quartet are brilliant examples of the composer's unique synthesis of Spanish ambience and French form."

For a number of years
Read more Claves Records has dedicated its efforts to the music and memory of Spanish composer Joaquín Turina. During the 90’s a colorful series of recordings was made featuring artists such as Maria Bayo, Ricardo Requejo and the Sine Nomine Quartet. And today a young trio from New York will accompany us a bit further on this musical journey through Andalusia with Turina’s three piano trios. The Damocles Trio, Adam Kent (piano), Airi Yoshioka (violin) and Sibylle Johner (cello), has made Spanish music one of its specialties. Knowing that Turina is still relatively unknown among broader audiences, the artists took it upon themselves to provide a detailed commentary for the booklet that accompanies this CD. This recording is rounded off with Turina’s Piano Quartet in A Minor, which the trio performs together with Lawrence Dutton, the well known violist from the Emerson Quartet.

R E V I E W S:

Fanfare
Joaquin Turina's piano trios have enjoyed a degree of popularity in recent years, with recordings by the Beckova Trio (Chandos) and Trío Arbós (Naxos) preceding this new disc by The Damocles Trio. One thing that immediately distinguishes the current recording is its warmer and fuller recorded sound, the lack of which was the only flaw in the otherwise excellent Naxos disc (type Q4361 in Search Reviews). This adds to the impressionistic atmosphere conjured by the Debussy-influenced Trios Nos. 1 & 2. The Damocles' finely calibrated timbral shadings, richly sonorous tone, and flowing phrasing makes for unalloyed pleasure throughout both works--a marked contrast to Trío Arbós' more incisive playing (though this factor gives the Arbós the decided edge in the Spanish inflections of Turina's Círculo). The Damocles Trio's program offers greater stylistic consistency by including Turina's A minor Piano Quartet rather than the early F major Trio included on the Arbós disc. So refined is Turina's ensemble writing that you immediately notice the extra viola in the musical texture, and Lawrence Dutton's contribution adds to the group's persuasive performance of this thematically pungent and emotionally vibrant work. All things considered, those strictly wanting the trios should stick to the Arbós disc, but the Damocles' more varied program presents a compelling alternative. --Victor Carr Jr
