Shirley Horn

Born: May 1, 1934; Washington D.C.   Died: October 20, 2005; Cheverly, MD
It's taken a long time, but pianist/vocalist Shirley Horn is finally enjoying the fruits of stardom she should have reaped many years ago. Though she was praised and assisted back in the '60s by Miles Davis, Quincy Jones and many others, Horn was unknown to even much of the jazz audience until the late '80s. Her understated, subtle yet engaging and harmonically ambitious playing, coupled with her equally capable, delightful vocals, have gained Read more widespread attention. Horn began playing piano at four, and studied music at Howard University. She started a trio in the mid-'50s, and began recording in the early '60s. Horn did swing and, bebop material, recorded with trios, combos and even made a session with a large orchestra conducted by Jones. But it was a 1987 live date for Verve that proved Horn's breakthrough album. Since then, she's made several acclaimed sessions as a pianist and vocalist, each one getting rave reviews and most also making Billboard's jazz charts. Her '93 release "Light Out of Darkness" was a Top 10 seller on the jazz charts. She's recorded for Mercury, Steeplechase, Audiophile and Verve, among others. Horn has several dates available on CD.
