Notes and Editorial Reviews

Unexpected - but Dame Fecility is glorious in these chamber transcriptions

The idea of chamber transcriptions of these works might initially sound like a recipe for Wagner-Lite but in the digesting it is, surprisingly, very satisfying. That’s entirely down to the Schumann Quartet -– who rise to the challenge of sounding as full-blooded as an orchestra section –- and Felicity Lott, who really uses the lighter textures to point the words, to float the phrases. Absolutely lovely.

Here’s one for the Want List, and to think it was sent to me marked “optional”!

The one factor that makes this unique disc work for me is the sense of translucence that is brought to the music. This is evident in the discretely made transcriptions of Christian Favre, who is also the Quatuor Schumann’s pianist. Staying close to the spirit of the original in all cases, he expands the accompaniment to each song to highlight the inner strength and the possibilities for instrumental coloring as a primary means of carrying emotion upon which words are laid with the utmost care. The accompaniments themselves make a distinct impact, and they need to when the normally weighty “bleeding chunks” of the Tristan Prelude and Isolde’s death are considered, but they shy away from bombast. Favre—to his credit—even resists giving the piano an overly dominant role, preferring to use it to shade the contributions of Tedi Papavrami’s bright violin, Christoph Schiller’s rich viola, and François Guye’s noble-sounding cello.

Without all this, it would be hard to imagine, let alone understand, Felicity Lott’s presence as the vocal soloist on the disc. She is probably the least likely soprano one might imagine for repertoire dominated by such Bayreuth greats as Dame Gwyneth Jones or Birgit Nilsson. Lott has sung Mahler songs and contributed to recordings of Symphonies Nos. 2, 4, and 8 before, but with the exception of Attente , recorded in 1984 for Harmonia Mundi, I am fairly sure this is the first Wagner she has committed to disc. Her Web site reveals that she sang Isolde’s Death as a student, presumably with piano accompaniment. In place of Wagnerian heft or Mahlerian angst, Lott brings intelligence of phrasing, constantly beautiful tone, and refreshing subtlety of interpretation. Her German is not quite perfect, but no matter. As fine as the Mahler is in capturing the solitude behind the music, it is the Wagner performances—particularly the Wesendonck Lieder —that offer most in terms of giving a new perspective on much loved works.

The sound quality is excellent, though just occasionally microphone levels might have been enhanced to lend the performances some extra weight. Antoine Mignon’s accompanying notes are useful; that sung texts and translations are absent is likely to matter little to collectors who have these works already in their more usual guises.
