Transcriptions of orchestral works for string quintet were popular towards the end of the 18th century. It was common to play such transcriptions during evenings devoted to music at home, a popular activity, especially in Vienna. The Schubert family frequently enjoyed such transcriptions in the privacy of their home. Schubert's father's personal collection includes a complete transcription of Mozart's Symphony No. 38 in D "Prague," the original of which was completed in Vienna on December 6, 1786. The first performance took place under the composer in Prague on January 19, 1787, during Mozart's visit there for the very successful performances of his Nozze di Figaro. The transcription was probably made by Schubert's father in 1793 or 1794.

On the first page is a penciled note identifying the players: "I. Violin: Ferdinand Schubert; II. Violin Ignatz Schubert; I Viola: Franz Peter Schubert; II Viola (?); Violoncello: Franz Schubert Father." Schubert's older brother Ferdinand said that the whole family would play together, especially during the long evenings of winter. His memory of such events is sweetly domestic: It was a charming experience to play music at our home with our youngest brother Franz and our father. The boy was the most sensitive of us all and, whenever we made a little mistake or played a wrong note, he would chuckle or make a stern face. Our father played the cello part and, if he made a mistake, at first young Franz would say nothing. But, if father repeated the same mistake more than once, Franz would very shyly say `Father, something must be wrong!' Our beloved father took pleasure in being corrected by young Franz." Read less
