One after another, Read more unknown composers make their recording debuts on a full CD. This is one of the more important examples of the trend, a disc worth savoring. Ludovico Balbi (c. 1545–c. 1604) first enters the historical record with a book of madrigals published by Gardano in 1570. At the time he was a singer at St. Mark’s in Venice, a slightly older contemporary of Giovanni Gabrieli. He became a Franciscan friar, and he was considered for the position of maestro at a series of churches in the Venice region. Some he failed to attain, others he turned down. From 1585 to 1591 he was maestro at the Padua cathedral, then served briefly at Feltre and Treviso, publishing sacred and secular music. His vital dates are known only by inference.

The program draws on a manuscript of Vespers psalms and canticles uniquely preserved at Feltre cathedral and dated 1594. Two more discs will follow to complete the recording of the manuscript. These polyphonic psalms are sung in alternation with chant and organ verses by four other composers. Among these four composers, Cavazzoni also contributes two organ hymns and Gabrieli two organ works: a toccata and a fantasia. The use of a soloist in the chant versicles seems out of place, but the polyphonic choir is remarkably smooth. The organ, a 1767 instrument at the Feltre cathedral built by Gaetano Callido, produces a very fine sound. This cannot be considered a liturgical reconstruction, for the antiphons, versicles, and collect are omitted and there are an extra psalm and an extra hymn, but it contains the major elements of Vespers in normal order. The performances are on such a high level that the disc makes a major contribution to the discography of Renaissance Venice. Lorenzetti, the organist, is a musicologist of wide experience as well as a performer. He participated in an international conference on Balbi and his times held in Lucca in 2005 (the proceedings were published). The notes were written by Piervito Malusà, who published an edition of the manuscript in 2006. Don’t overlook this fine disc because of the unfamiliar names. I eagerly await the forthcoming discs.
