Notes and Editorial Reviews

Thorkell Sigurbjornsson is an Icelandic composer who, after training in his native country in the late 1950s, came to America where he studied with Lejaren Hiller and Kenneth Gaburo at that bastion of the academic avant-garde, the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. His music shows a variety of modernist influences, from Webern to Ligeti, which seem well-integrated into an assured personal style, a hallmark of which is an insistent, often repetitive rhythmic impulse. In the trio 'Kisum,' he evokes nature through unconventional techniques, having the players blow, tap and scrape their instruments to produce odd, almost electronic sounding squeals and growls. The two quartet pieces show Sigurbjornsson moving from austere post-war Read more atonality to something more relaxed, adopting bits of minimalism, the music falling into little fragmented tonal grooves before moving on and generally opening up to a wider variety of expressive possibilities. This is interesting music, modest but not meek. Read less
