Notes and Editorial Reviews

Richard Strauss's preeminent status as an opera and song composer has long eclipsed his accomplishments in writing for the piano. This is regrettable, for the characteristics that make Strauss's vocal music so beloved--soaring melodies, rich harmonic invention, rhythmic flair--are to be found throughout his piano compositions and transcriptions. With this delightful recording, which also includes transcriptions of Strauss's works by others, the Russian pianist Sascha Zolotarev should go far in turning the uninitiated into Strauss piano music converts. Zolotarev's refined finger technique gives delicately nuanced shape to the five 'Stimmungsbilder'--early Strauss compositions marked by Mendelssohnian understatement and lyricism. Elsewhere, Read more as in Walter Gieseking's thoughtful transcriptions of Strauss's songs, Zolotarev shows himself at home both in moments of dazzling virtuosity and melting lyricism. And his performance of Max Reger's transcription of the justifiably famous song 'Morgen' is a revelation. Both the Reger and the Gieseking transcriptions, along with Strauss's transcription-recomposition of Franz Schubert's Waltz in G flat and the Otto Singer transcription of the waltz from 'Der Rosenkavalier,' are recorded here for the first time. A must for the Strauss devotee. Read less
