Notes and Editorial Reviews

Leif Segerstam writes about this piece: "July is one of the conductor-less orchestral fantasies that just had to be written down in 1995. (April, December, September and January came first). The orchestral "happening" has ten starts. The sign for these moments comes from the pianist who plays a solo part with an obligato character. It is tailor-made for a musical personality with a rich imagination and world of ideas (perhaps a Kapellmeister or composer). It does not necessarily need to be a virtuosic lion of the keyboard but an orchestral pianist who nevertheless plays with such focus-attracting intensity that he or she appears to be playing the role of a solo obligato instrument inspiring the others to join in the mutual creative Read more process arising from this unique, freely pulsating musical situation without a conductor. The inspiration for many of the visions which arise here comes from the July heat which stimulates the soul and the imagination to cook up ways to break the boundaries of up till now unheard musical fables and fantasies. Just the sort of thing that only arises during a sort of pleasurable siesta's daydreaming - freely floating clouds of musical associations en route to and from the spontaneous breadth of the present moment in a mutual experience phenomenon with direct transmission of musical activity from lips and fingertips...without the intermediary conductor's showstealing body language. Those who fancy they can hear colder tones in the piece should not forget that July for Australians means mid-winter." Read less
