Notes and Editorial Reviews

In late February 1653, just after the Fronde rebellion, the most influential spectacle of the early reign of Louis XIV was presented at the Louvre: the Ballet Royal de la Nuit. Grandiose, and carefully elaborated at the highest levels of the state, the libretto by Bensérade called upon the finest artists of the time. Banishing the troubles of night, Louis XIV danced in the Sun King costume that would henceforth be forever associated with him. This unmissable world première recording presents a reconstruction of the work created by Sébastien Daucé that includes music by Jean de Cambefort, Antoine Boesset, Louis Constantin, Michel Lambert, Francesco

The Sun King comes back in a Blaze of Glory!!! November 1, 2015 By Clifford H C. (Thompson, MB) See All My Reviews "Sebastien Dauce has spent several years of his life working on this project and it is well worth while. Le Concert Royal de la Nuit is a ballet that set itself into the consciousness of the music and ballet world for centuries although before today a complete picture of the music was never available. This is a remarkable program that shows French early baroque music at the height of its achievement. Presentation by Harmonia Mundi is the best I have seen in years The two CD set comes encased in a lavish 180 page book explaining the history of the Music, Ballet, and the politics of the time. This special edition includes the engraving of many of the original costumes and backgrounds used in the Ballet. You can also download the Hi-Definition version from the Harmonia web site in 24 Bit FLAC files. Sebastien Dauce has reconstructed the music from descriptions, the word books and incomplete violin parts. Ensemble Correspondances performs the music admirably and the sound recording is top notch. This is a MUST HAVE for lovers of French Baroque. The image of Louis XIV as the Sun King is so ingrained into the consciousness of the modern world, this recording will show you why this image has lasted for so many years. It leaves me with a craving to see this ballet performed live with all the effects, machinery and the beautiful costumes. You will not regret the purchase of this amazing CD set." Report Abuse
