Biography by Anne Feeney
Ryland Davies, a light lyric tenor, has appeared worldwide in leads and comprimario roles in opera and oratorio. He studied voice at the Royal Manchester College of Music with Frederic Cox, among others. He made his opera debut in 1964 as the Count in Rossini's The Barber of Seville. The next year, he began his longtime association with Glyndebourne, making his debut there as the Major-domo in Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier. In 1969, he made his Covent Garden debut as Hylas in Berlioz's Les Troyens, and made his Salzburg debut the next year as Cassio in Verdi's Otello. His United States debut came the same year in San Francisco as Ferrando in Mozart's Cosě fan tutte. He made his Metropolitan debut in 1975 in the same role. During the later years of his career, he began teaching; his students included fellow lyric tenor Andrew Kennedy.
