Notes and Editorial Reviews

Letís cut to the chase: the rediscovered concerto that is now known as No. 3, Op. Posthumous, in E-Flat Major may be the earliest of the three. In March 1836, Liszt wrote to his mother asking her to send him copies of some of his earliest published works which contained musical materials that worked their way into this piece. Not long after, Lisztís secretary and concert manager Gaetano Belloni made copies of all three concertos. When, in 1849, the composer took up revisions of the other concertos, he put this one aside and nothing more was heard of it during his lifetime. After his death, it was considered a rejected version of a movement from the famous E-Flat Major concerto. Only with the studies of Jay Rosenblatt and the publication of Read more the work in the late 1980s was it definitely established that this ìnewî work was a fully independent creation. Joshua Pierce again proves his talents as one of the most versatile virtuosi of our time, performing with nearly every major orchestra and appearing on many labels in repertoire both familiar (Brahms, Gershwin, Rachmaninov) and unusual (Casella, Creston and Schoenberg).
