| Barbara Nissman writes: "My first encounter with Alberto Ginastera was during my student years, while learning his First Piano Sonata. As a young performer, I was immediately attracted to its natural pianism, brilliant virtuosity and those strong, Latin-American dance rhythms. It was a joy to study because of the composer's craft; he knew and respected the piano and was able to exploit it for his own personal expression. All the elements found in his well-known 1952 First Sonata were present: the sharp contrasts, sudden accents, syncopations, Latin rhythms, motoric rhythmic energy, and a respect for form and structure, combined with a wide palette of orchestral colors and effects. My first public performance of this work happened to coincide with Ginastera's visit as the featured composer of the University of Michigan's Contemporary Festival. We met at rehearsal - that was in 1971 - I remember him sitting in the empty hall, listening - he was enjoying himself. I expected him to be super critical, but he was so very gracious. He didn't look at all as I had imagined - he could have passed for a South American banker; certainly he didn't fit my visual image of the man who wrote such passionate, primitive music. I think that's why he liked our first performance - he was able to listen to his music without preconceptions and respected our interpretation. After the performance, he came back stage and said to me, "One day I will write a Concerto for Piano and Percussion for you." Unfortunately because of failing health, he never began work on our concerto. Instead, he dedicated his Third Piano Sonata to me and sadly, this short one-movement solo work, became his final composition." 5703060515426 034060165423 Point Records PCD 5154/5 BACH Silvia "Roland Haraldson, conductor | |||||
