Biography by Joseph Stevenson
Italian baritone Rolando Panerai has had one of the most durable of singing careers, mainly in supporting roles. His career lasted over half a century, beginning with his appearance at Naples in 1947 in Rossini's Mosè. He joined the roster at La Scala in 1951 after debuting in Samson et Dalila. He sang performances of the title role of Falstaff and the part of Dr. Dulcamara in L'Elisir d'Amore in 2001.

He studied in Florence with Frazzi and in Milan with Giulia Tess. In his debut year of 1947 he also sang Luna, Giorgio Germont, and Rossini's Count Almaviva. Another of his best-known roles is Ford in Falstaff, which was he debut role in the Salzburg Festival of 1957.

He frequently collaborated in performance and recording with conductor Herbert von Karajan, who brought out Panerai's best work. He sang in the Italian premiere of Hindemith's Mathis der Maler in 1957.

He recorded Così fan tutte, Falstaff, and La Bohème twice, and also appeared in recordings of Cavalleria rusticana, I Puritani, Il Trovatore, Madama Butterfly, I Pagliacci, L'Elisir d'amore, and Lucia di Lamermoor.
