Notes and Editorial Reviews

Robert Rutman plays something called a "steel cello" - there are no liner notes, but by the sound of this disc, it sounds like a metal construct which produces tones when bowed. Imagine a huge cello with a steel body and strings, and you could begin to imagine the sounds produced here. Rutman and his fellow players create icy, dark sustained tones that sound like heavy machinery "singing" laments from the Middle Ages. The textures produced on 1939 are akin to the minimalist styles of LaMonte Young and Alvin Lucier, rather than the "pattern" minimalism of Glass, Reich or Riley. The five pieces here have no "melodies" in the conventional sense - the concept here is sound-as-music, sculpting to create oddly soothing textures. The low vocal Read more tones of Tibetan and Himalayan vocal music is also a point of reference - "Chant, Bow Chime, and Horn" even features Danny Orlansky playing a Tibetan horn.
For some, music has common ground with mathematics - on this unique disc, a case can be made for music having common ground with metallurgy. 1939 makes for a fascinating listen for those smitten with the philosophies of John Cage and the minimalists. Read less
