The oratorio 'Israel in Egypt' was a turning point in the career of George Frideric Handel. Prior to its 1739 composition, Handel's focus and fame rested on his Italian operas. 'Israel in Egypt' marks Handel's foray into the English baroque oratorio, the first in a series of great works that also included his 'Saul,' 'Messiah' and 'Solomon.'
Set to texts taken from the Old Testament of the Bible, the work is divided into three parts: "The Lamentations of the Israelites," "Exodus" and "Moses' Song." Handel's oratorio is a grand work where the chorus assumes the key dramatic role.
