Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Dvo?ák pieces work really well in these transcriptions for flute, clarinet, and piano. All the arrangements on the disc are by the clarinettist of the Webster Trio, Michael Webster. Any musicians who need some fresh, rousing repertoire for this combination, should sample the opening of this Crystal CD, where the Presto dance, op. 46/8, goes with a real bang. The Allegretto grazioso dance, op. 72/12, is even more successful in evoking a whole orchestra with three instruments, without too much apparent technical difficulty. Performances here are excellent, with a seamless match between the two winds, and a coherent blend with Robert Moeling’s buoyant piano textures. Recordings are very fine, and give a notably clear reproduction of Read more Leone Buyse’s distinctive, clear and, well, fluting tone, with no action noises.

Otherwise, the Brahms arrangements are a mixed bag, but always fun. Nice chalumeau playing from Webster in No. 16, while the ubiquitous No. 5 is also clarinet-led, and for once sounds more like a Jewish wedding than a Gypsy campfire romp. Plenty of manageable encores, here. This version of the Petite suite may come in handy for trio concerts, too. Webster sometimes allows the flute to double brushstrokes with the piano’s upper register, while the clarinet carries the main line: again, a sure-fingered orchestral effect. The Gottschalk works, an inspired choice, give this trio the best chance to show off, and are recommended to any players who enjoy a challenge and a tune. Souvenir de Cuba is beguiling, but the Tarantelle offers convincing crescendo runs from Buyse and cheeky accompanying figures from Webster. In fact, this combination is a delight for the listener as well as being a useful guide for prospective performers of these expert Webster arrangements.
