Notes and Editorial Reviews

Robert Lucas Pearsall was born in Bristol and died in Switzerland. A once practicing barrister (between 1821 and 1825), he gave up his profession after suffering a mild stroke, and moved abroad to pursue his interests in the arts, history, genealogy and heraldry. For four years (1825-29) he studied under Joseph Panny in Mainz where he fell under the influence of the Catholic church music revival (known as the Cecilian movement). During this period his interests in early music (particularly in 16th century counterpoint) and antiquarianism were kindled which gave rise to the composition of vocal works in a deliberately archaic "motet" style; this enthusiasm was later reinforced by Kaspar Ett of Munich from whom Pearsall gained knowledge of Read more how to transcribe the notation of the original sources. Charles Wood is best known today as a composer of church music for the Anglican liturgy. In his many settings of the Evening Canticles he learned much from Stanford in terms of thematic cohesion and structure, but he was not tempted to ape the symphonic concept of his teacher, preferring instead to adopt a more conservative ecclesiastical style. In his later liturgical works the inclination to assimilate more archaic mannerisms became more accentuated. Read less
