Violinist Lara St. John is not an artist who aims to please everyone. She's an adventurous performer committed to making music on her own terms. Accusations that she exploits her model-worthy looks have dogged her since early in her career, despite near-universal acclaim for her superb technique, imaginative interpretations, and high-powered performance style. St. John shrugs these negative remarks off as old news and looks forward, instead, to new challenges. RE: BACH, her initial foray into the treacherous terrain of "crossover" territory, will likely work purists and traditionalists into a fresh lather. St. John, in collaboration with composer/producer Magnus Fiennes, draws from sources including jazz, world beat, electronica, and contemporary pop for an unconventional approach to the music of J.S. Bach. Fiennes, a guiding force behind the phenomenally successful crossover group Bond, stamps the proceedings with his unmistakable production style, creating richly textured soundscapes that are ideal tableaus for St. John's virtuosic flights of fancy. The disc's roster of fine musicians, including tabla master Trilok Gurtu and B.J. Cole on pedal steel guitar, is notable for the diverse disciplines represented. Elitists may scoff, but open-minded listeners will find much to enjoy on this intriguing album. |
