Listening to a full hour of music for solo violin can be something of a challenge, especially when much of it is of the gritty, atonal-ish, craggy, angular, edgy (you get the picture) style of late-20th-century composers trying to show how this genre at least as old as Bach can still newly impress. Yet these three composers—from Iceland, Denmark, and Finland—really go beyond whatever cheaply shocking or commonly gimmicky tricks others have employed to create some seriously difficult, substantial, engrossingly challenging works (for both player and listener) that reward persistence and undisturbed devotion of time and attention. But his realizations take us deeper into both the sound-world and the underlying strata of themes and development, of drama and quietly lyrical expression. Salonen’s Lachen verlernt is a gem; Hallgrimsson’s Offerto and Poemi (the latter includes a string orchestra) are disturbing and exhilarating. Don’t be scared; this is…interesting.
