Notes and Editorial Reviews
Of Elation, George Marriner Maull has said: "In Elation one encounters Max Schubel's extraordinary command of orchestration. From the moment the music begins we are given a kaleidoscopic aural delight for the senses that provides the context for expressing those overwhelming, if sometimes capricious, emotions we experience in romantic love." Next we have two versions of the music Schubel wrote to the environmental film, Guale, the Golden Coast of Georgia. The composer writes: "Every new work or project is, for me, an adventure. Guale has probably been the largest and most intense of all the escapades in which I have become involved. as I leafed through the book: magnificent, well-done and pointing up the environmental issues that, though seemingly regional, were applicable to all areas of the country (and, perhaps the world). I was asked to compose the music for the film. The film-makers sounded dedicated, though poor. And, the opportunity to compose the music in California, where the film was edited (away from the cold New England winter) was the final incentive. The score was finished on March 3rd, 1976. The music, all 72 pages of it, seemed to gush out in one month. The score is a series of sequences, with a theme (a real tune) that found its way down into my head. What you hear on this disc is all the music I wrote for Guale. Parts of it do not appear in the film; other parts are repeated in it." Read less
