Notes and Editorial Reviews

It has been said that Antonio Vivaldi was as important for the development of the concerto as was Haydn for the development of the symphony or the string quartet. The extensiveness of Vivaldi's production of concertos has been detrimental insofar as it has been assumed on the basis of a few familiar works that all the others were cast in the same mold. It is true that Vivaldi churned out ritornello forms with dialogue between soloist and orchestra, but on hearing new works there is increasing cause for amazement at the ingenuity and ability to surprise evinced by the Venetian composer. Vivaldi's concertos are modern Baroque: he was keen to embrace new instruments and combinations of instruments and experimented with innovative solutions Read more even in his last works. He progressed purposefully from the type of concerto created by Corelli at the beginning of the 18th century to his own individual style heard in much of the music recorded here. Read less
