Notes and Editorial Reviews

Gerhard Husch originally wanted to be an actor. He studied singing on the side and then in 1923, he began to fully contentrate on singing. In 1930 he was given a contract at the Berlin Opera and stayed there until 1944. From 1930 to 1938, he sang at Covent Garden and in 1930 and 1931 he sang Wolfram at the Bayreuth Festival under Toscanini and Siegfried Wagner. When one is asked to identify the typical "German" singer, the name of Gerhard Husch always comes up. With his pithy, sonorous voice and intellectual delivery he was the prototype of the German master singer as characterized by Richard Wagner in the figure of Wolfram von Eschenbach.
