After early study for a diplomatic career, Bréville studied at the Paris Conservatoire and took private lessons from Franck. He taught counterpoint at the Schola Cantorum and was very active in the Société Nationale de Musique. His opera, Eros vainqueur, (1900) is considered to be one of the most important operatic works of the era.
