Pia Tassinari began her career as a soprano and later moved to mezzo-soprano roles. Her voice is noteworthy for lyrical beauty and great range and she brought to various opera characters warmth, sensitivity, and refinement. Although she first entered the opera stage in 1929 her La Scala debut occurred in 1932. She toured widely, singing in opera houses from the USSR to South America. Tassinari made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1947, singing the role of Tosca. As her voice matured she took on mezzo soprano parts including Carmen, Charlotte, Amneris and Ulrica. Pia Tassinari married tenor Ferruccio Tagliavini with whom she sang on stage and in recordings. Both sang together in L'amico Fritz by Pietro Mascagni when the opera was conducted by the composer.
