Notes and Editorial Reviews

MARTINO 6 Trios. Notturno No. 1 • Age of Passions (period instruments) • SONY 88697690282 (67:26)

"I hadn’t heard of Philippo Martino prior to the arrival of this CD, and I suspect most of the record-buying public hasn’t, either. Not surprisingly, there is no entry for him in New Grove, and as the liner notes say, “Wir wissen nicht viel über Martino.” He seems to have been active in North Germany (Schwerin and Rostock) in the early part of the 18th century; his trios were published in Augsburg sometime between 1730 and 1733. They are the first recorded examples of concerted music for Baroque lute, and they bear more than a little trace of the emerging galant style. Despite the lack of pedigree, this is highly
Read more accomplished, thoroughly enjoyable music, alternately joyous and serious, with considerable rhythmic and melodic variety. The two-movement Notturno is from a collection in a Copenhagen library, and may be by a different Martino.

The Age of Passions is a period-instrument chamber group consisting of Lee Santana, Baroque lute; Karl Kaiser, Baroque flute; Petra Müllejans, Baroque violin; and Hille Perl, bass viola da gamba (Mrs. Santana in real life). In Trios I and VI, the upper lines are handled by violin and lute; in the remaining trios and the Notturno the flute and lute share melodic duties. In essence, the works are a kind of four-movement trio sonata, except that there’s no keyboard, the harmonic fill coming instead from the lute. Lee Satana’s playing on this CD is beyond reproach, and the other players, all veterans of the German period-instrument scene, play exceedingly well together. The engineering is clear, up front, and honest. A most delightful hour of Baroque chamber music—highly recommended."
