It was during the early early 1960s that Willi Boskovsky put us under the spell of Viennese dances played in reductions for two violins, viola and double-bass. This represents less than the full orchestral forces for which the pieces were written, but it is the sort of ensemble that might have been used for a Vienna house ball of the 1830s. What one loses in the lack of woodwind effects one tends to gain from the concentration on the professionalism and delicacy of the composers' writing for strings. Most of the pieces here were included in those Boskovsky collections, particularly in the very first (Decca BIG403, 3/62—nla). However, the Schwarz'sche Ball-Tiinze (named after the actor Carl Schwarz) are new to record and a curiosity too, being a medley of waltzes arranged from Auber's Masonic/b. The Nationallandler of the obscure Joseph Klauser are likewise receiving their first recording but, frankly, do not add up to much. In Die Werber I felt that Kremer and his colleagues missed some of the natural feel for this music that Boskovsky was able to bring to it. In the Eisele und Beisele Spriinge polka, however, I could only delight at the bounce that Kremer gives the piece. And in the Kettenbrikke-Walzer (which includes music later used memorably by Oscar Straus in Three Waltzes) I have no doubts at all that it is Kremer who achieves the more winning interpretation. Throughout there is extreme beauty of tone and phrasing and, not least, that crucial touch of emotional tension. I don't think that this record will be a disappointment either to those drawn to these arrangements for the first time or to confirmed lovers of the style seeking the benefit of digital sound. -- A.M.L., Gramophone [10/1984] |
