Biography by Michael Jameson
Born in the U.K. in 1953, Peter Child is professor of music at M.I.T. in Boston. He has lived in the U.S. since enrolling at Reed College under a junior-year exchange program. Child received his Ph.D. in composition from Brandeis University in 1981; his principal composition tutors have included William Albright, Arthur Berger, Martin Boykan, Jacob Druckman, and Seymour Shifrin.

Child's works have been selected for awards and commendations from Tanglewood, WGBH Radio, East and West Artists, the New England Conservatory, the League/ISCM, and the M.I.T. Council for the Arts. He also received fellowships from the Massachusetts Artists Foundation, the Watson Foundation, the MacDowell Colony, and the Composers' Conference, as well as four new works commissions from the Massachusetts Council for the Arts and Humanities.

Several of his works have been recorded commercially, mainly on the New World, CRI, Neuma, Centaur, and Rivoalto labels. Child's favored media include orchestra, chorus, solo voice, computer synthesis, and various chamber groups. His works have been premiered by many prominent performing ensembles in the Greater Boston area and have been heard farther afield in concerts throughout the U.S., as well as in London, Sydney, Padua, Moscow, and elsewhere.
