After a period of study as a philosophy student, Borkovec studied music with Foerster and Kricka and attended Suk's master class at the conservatory. These musicians influenced him in his early lyrical, romantic style. He soon developed a style derived from the neo-classicism of Stravinsky, Hindemith and Honegger.
