John Gay, wrote 'The Beggar's Opera' in 1728, but it is 200 years later that a version reworked by Kurt Weill that is best remembered. Together with Bertold Brecht, Weill continued to work on the theme, culminating with his best known work, 'The Three-Penny Opera.' In his 'Beggar's Opera,' Weill created new text to accompany the original score. The music was traditional British, a style he emulated when fitting new music to old texts for 'The Three-Penny Opera.' It is a style fitting to many interpretations, as affecting of music connoisseurs as to the occasional listener. Accordionists Pascal Le Pennec and Philippe Borocek adapted the music for their instruments, providing a remarkably homey and nostalgic interpretation. The several registers available to an accordionist gives voice to an orchestra of sound without sounding crowded. |
