"With a conductor of John Nelson's integrity, this set by Ensemble Orchestral de Paris (not to be confused with Orchestre de Paris) demands serious attention and takes an appealingly conciliatory stance. Though using modern instruments, Nelson incorporates historic-performance elements not for what they do to the music, but for what they allow it to say.
Few performances have such a sense of the music's thematic volleys from instrument to instrument. And though many cycles treat the even-numbered symphonies as less-pretentious rest cures from the profound odd-numbered ones, Nelson finds more depth in the 4th and 8th and refrains from a philosophical dissection of the 3rd, 7th and 9th.
