Notes and Editorial Reviews

"Apt for Voyces and Viols" the old legend used to run; and it could very well have gone on to say "and Wyndes". The truth is that the style of writing of the day did, conveniently, allow much music to be transferred easily from one medium to another and remain effective. The growing skill of the keyboard players quite soon began to put an end to this particular honeymoon; but this has not prevented the Eastman Brass Quintet from scouring all sources of the period for their music, and coming up with a great deal of it which arranges beautifully for brass.

For brass-playing of this order, that is: these players could (and in some pieces do) knock spots off many keyboard players for fluency, and many string
Read more players for sensitivity. Encompassing such a wide range gives a variety and listenability to the programme as a whole that not all brass programmes have: just as the Weelkes madrigals chosen here embrace both the very grave and the very gay so too do the instrumental pieces of Samuel Scheidt (usually the preserve of organists, this composer would respond well to wider investigation).

The splendid effect of the music does not, of course, depend only on the individual skill of players: good arranging and good balance also contribute substantially. The firm horn-playing is allowed to duet on equal terms with the agile trombone-playing where suitable; it is also quite capable of providing a strong bass to the two trumpets. These two trumpets are themselves, however, curiously balanced, the first very noticeably stronger than the second: while this does make the two voices readily distinguishable, it does also lend a rather penetrating quality to the leading part in the ensemble as a whole, rather as in an over-strongly led string quartet. But this is the only point of very minor contention; for the rest of it a well-balanced tuba, a substantial resonance in the studio, and a very good overall quality all make for a general sound of splendidly ringing brass quality.
