Notes and Editorial Reviews

It's always interesting to hear a performer dip his toes into another musical field. As a pianist, Olli Mustonen often indulges himself in the most wayward and mannered flights of fancy. As a composer, at least on evidence here, he's a charming neo-classicist with a delightfully bracing rhythmic sensibility totally at odds with his hyper-Romantic keyboard persona. These appealing works make no great demands on the listener, but consistently engage the attention though skillful manipulation of traditional harmonies, tunes, and textures.

The Triple Concerto's neo-Baroque façade permits some delicious contrapuntal interplay between the three violin soloists, more than a touch of folk fiddling, and a finale that begins like
Read more a friendlier version of the opening of Hindemith's Kammermusik No. 1. The second movement of Nonet No. 1 sounds something like a harmonically updated answer to Grieg's Holberg Suite. Scored for cello and strings, the Petite Suite concludes with some evocative character pieces--a "Chanson russe" and "Danse orientale". The French movement titles accurately point out the composer's source of inspiration as well as his musical models in terms of the elegance, wit, and craftsmanship he writes into all of these works. The spirit of Poulenc and Les Six isn't too far away.

In short, this music will not please those who believe that the image of Mustonen the pianistic wild man should carry over into his work as a composer, nor will it appeal to fans of the 20th century's knottier musical innovations. But I easily can see this disc becoming popular with radio stations and other purveyors of engaging, non-threatening, but still serious music; which means that many normal people will probably enjoy it too, especially given these excellently played and recorded performances under Mustonen's personal direction. The guy's a real talent, no doubt about it.
