Notes and Editorial Reviews

Sir Charles Villiers Stanford was one of the most influential musicians as a composer and teacher at the turn of the 19th century. He taught many leading composers in Britain including Vaughan-Williams, Holst, Ireland, Bridge, Bliss, Howells and many others while he was at the Royal College of Music. It is good to see that his reputation as a composer has been revived at the end of the 20th century and that his considerable output is being recorded. His church music has always remained (justifiably) popular and mainstream, his Service settings being the cornerstone of the Anglican Cathedral choral service. This recording features works less well known, some of which have fallen into undeserved obscurity. Andrew Lucas has been Master of Read more Music of the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St. Albans since February 1998, after eight years as the Sub-Organist of St. Paul's Cathedral in London. He is also conductor of the St. Albans Bach Choir. Read less
