Notes and Editorial Reviews

Piano music occupies a small but significant part of Arnold Schoenberg's output--many of his innovations emerged in his solo piano works--but he produced nothing for keyboard duo aside from transcriptions. It may be hard to imagine the vivid, wind-dominated First Chamber Symphony of 1906 pared down to piano four hands, yet the arrangement exemplifies Schoenberg's aesthetics: instrumental color was only significant to him as a tool to clarify the harmonies and melodic lines of his complex works. In these transcriptions, Schoenberg presents his ideas in their most concentrated, uncompromising form, making the works sound all the more forward-looking.
The First Chamber Symphony is the densest work here, yet the Mendelssohn Duo successfully
Read more clarify the thick textures, bringing out both the exhilarating and playful elements. The more transparent Second Chamber Symphony is an even better fit for the two-piano medium. The 'Variations for Orchestra' are presented here in a recent two-piano arrangement by Charles Wuorinen. As a showpiece for Schoenberg to prove the versatility of his methods of serial composition, this is cerebral music and proudly so. Wuorinen's transcription--aided immensely by the duo's energetic performance--may succeed best of all these works in revealing Schoenberg's elegant structure and inventiveness. Read less
