The Wind Quintet literature is comparatively small when considered alongside other chamber ensembles such as the piano trio or the string quartet. But this CD should go a long way in refurbishing with its mixture of pieces written especially for a wind quintet as well as some striking transcriptions.
The jazz-flavored Preludes by George Gershwin undergo a marvelous transition from the original state as piano works. With bluesy melodies and popular dance rhythms, these pieces are wonderfully suited for wind quintet--with the bassoon in particular being put to sly good use.
Henry Cowell's Suite for Woodwind Quintet is an ideal work that showcases the dexterity and virtuosity of the Solaris musicians. Cowell's music is often craggy and
Read more angular but here we have a fun and mischievous work. The second movement is particularly memorable for its chattering nature that brings to mind Charles Ives' noisy "town hall" ethos.
Perhaps the standout pieces here are the various "Anniversaries" by Leonard Bernstein selected for transcription by Solaris' flutist, George Pope. These pieces, each one distinctive because they were written with particular individuals in mind, not only display Bernstein's broad compositional talents, but also serve to showcase Pope's ingenious transcribing talents.
